4 Myths About Dental Implants

When it comes to replacing teeth, one of the best options to consider are dental implants. A small screw is interested into your mouth that acts as a stable base for a prosthetic tooth. This replacement tooth, which features a cap similar to other dental crowns, will have the same function and appearance as a healthy tooth. To the average person looking in, it will be impossible to tell that you have dental implants.

Dental implants are a safe and effective way to replace teeth, but despite their popularity there are many myths about them that scare patients away from getting dental implants. Learn more  to find out the truth to four of the most common myths about dental implants.

Myth #1: It hurts getting dental implants

Your dental treatment should be as painless as possible, and thanks to modern anesthesia you won’t have anything to fear when you get dental implants. In most cases, local anesthesia is used to numb the area where dental implants are inserted, allowing you to be fully awake for the treatment. This means you can get your implants inserted painlessly and quickly so you can continue on with your day after treatment is completed.

However, it is important to note that your mouth will likely be sore for a week or two after treatment, especially if you have replaced multiple teeth with dental implants. In most cases, over-the-counter pain medication will be enough until your mouth recovers. Be sure to follow your dentist’s recommended instructions for recovery to reduce the chance of pain.

Myth #2: Only young patients can get dental implants

Dental implants are for patients young and old. In fact, dental implants are often recommended to older patients first. The reason why is that dental implants provide additional jaw and gum support, which many older patients need as decay and aging sets in.

That isn’t to say young patients can’t get dental implants. Dental implants are a more permanent and invasive treatment than dental crowns and bridges, both of which are recommended to patients with healthier teeth. Dental implants offer more permanent correction than crowns and bridges, so consult your dentist about the best treatment option for your needs.

Myth #3: Dental implants don’t feel natural

Dental implants feel just as natural and look just as good as dental crowns, bridges, and other common oral treatment solutions. The only major difference is that a titanium or zirconium oxide mount is inserted into your gums to support your new prosthetic tooth. As for the crown itself, it is the same porcelain or ceramic base used in other dental treatments.

As a result, you’ll find it easier to chew, speak, and use your mouth after dental implant treatment is completed. This is both a cosmetic and restorative treatment solution, making your mouth look better while allowing you to have a mouth full of properly working teeth again.

Myth #4: Dental implants are too expensive

Dental implants are more expensive than other dental treatment options, but they do last longer compared to bridges and crowns. Whereas most dental treatment solutions only last for 10 to 15 years, dental implants often last 30 plus years, or even a lifetime with proper oral care. As such, you’ll save money in the long run if you take good care of your implants and reduce the number of visits and treatments you’ll need from your dentist.

Dental insurance packages vary, but many of them do cover dental implants when they are needed to replace teeth. Be sure to contact your insurance company and your dentist to find out how much you might be able to save if you’re considering dental implants.
